Island Collection

The Starfish

Starfish are Asteroidea having rays, or arms, surrounding an indistinct central disk. Despite their older common name, they are not fish.

The Stingray

Stingrays vary in size: Dasyatis sabina is mature at a width of about 25 cm, but the Australian D. brevicaudata's width is about 2 metres. For my piece, I went for a size in between the two.

The Crab

Out of 10,000 crab species that have been described, I created my  unique blend of green and blue.

The Octopus

The best-known octopus is the common octopus, O. vulgaris, which is thought to be the most intelligent of all invertebrate animals.

The Conch

Natural populations of conchs have been decimated over the years by overharvesting, so I reproduced one at home.

The Shell

Seashells are collected all over the world because of their wide range of variety, exquisite form, and vibrant colours. I have added to the collection.

The Fish

Most fish species are cold-blooded; however, one species, the opah (Lampris guttatus), is warm-blooded.

The Pineapple

The earliest written references to pineapple are by Christopher Columbus, Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés, and Sir Walter Raleigh, who found pineapple being used for food and wine making in the West Indies. My pineapple is being used for ceramics making.
